Mailbag: Where to shop?
17-Mar-2004Hi,
I have found some low carb recipes that I would like to try but I am having a hard time finding the ingredients that are called for in the recipe. I am looking for the following:
- full fat soy flour
- vanilla protein powder
- DaVinci Splenda sweetened vanilla syrup
- Oat flour
- Vital wheat gluten
- Almond flour
I would appreciate if you could tell me where I can purchase these items.
Thank you.
Bonnie
Dear Bonnie,
Unfortunately, availability of these items varies from region to region, and sometimes even from store to store within a chain.
The easiest to find should be the vanilla protein powder. My favorite for baking is Designer Whey Protein*. I have seen it for sale in the health or fitness sections of regular supermarkets, in health food stores, and even in convenience stores. You can also usually get it at mass-market retailers like Wal-Mart and Target.
The flours - soy, oat, almond, vital wheat gluten - are sometimes available in the organic or natural foods section of your regular supermarket, which will usually stock items from Arrowhead Mills or Bob's Red Mill. I'm lucky, I can get them all at my local Fry's Food and Drug. Your best bet, though, would be a natural foods supermarket, if there are any in your area. Here in the Phoenix metro area, we have Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Sunflower Markets. If you take a look at their websites, you can get an idea of what these stores are like and see if there is anything similar near you. One of the great advantages of these stores is, in addition to carrying pre-packaged flours, they often have many in bulk bins that allow you to purchase just the amount you need for a much lower price. If you live anywhere near a Trader Joe's, they stock a very reasonably priced almond flour and offer several different kinds of protein powder as well.
DaVinci, Torani, and Monin O'Free sugar-free syrups can sometimes be found in the coffee section of your grocery store. Some Wal-mart SuperStores stock DaVinci sugar-free syrups with their coffee, too. Selection is likely to be limited, though. CostPlus World Market carries an extensive selection of Torani sugar-free syrups, if there are any in your area. Discount stores such as Marshall's and TJ Maxx sometimes have sugar-free syrups in their kitchen supplies department, too, but you never know what flavors they'll have. Your final option is to seek out restaurant supply stores (like Smart & Final), which often have a reasonable selection at very good prices.
If you're at wit's end and don't mind paying for shipping, you can always order these products online. My favorite flours all come from Bob's Red Mill, but you may not want the quantities necessary to order directly from them. One of my favorite low carb online shopping sites is Netrition, which offers the best price you'll find online for DaVinci syrups, with reasonable shipping rates, too.
Hope this helps!

Joan(*) For actually making shakes, I prefer the Keto brand from Life Services.
