Mailbag: Low Carb Milk?
10-Feb-2004

I read your Make it low carb! Article and was quite happy when you offered to decarb one's favorite recipes.  I went on a low carb diet September 9th, 2003 and have since lost 54 pounds and 3 dress sizes.  I have hit a plateau since January and I am still battling to get off the plateau.

My favorite breakfast treat is egg and cereal.  I use the atkins cereal, but eating it with milk has proved to be challenging.    Right now I use the Lactose free, lactaid milk.  I cup = 13g of carb and 2/3 cups of atkins cereal = 5 net carbs.

I usually measure out half of cup milk and 1 cup of the cereal as opposed to 2/3 cups of cereal in the hopes that the milk will balance out the overall carb.  Sometimes, I add a half cup of water to the milk just to have enough liquid for the cereal.  Do you know if there are any low carb milk out there?  If yes where can I get one?

I am not big on taking vitamins and so have tried very had to modify most of my favorite foods to suit my low carb lifestyle but how do you begin to make up for milk.  Adding water to cream just does not do it for me.  Please any other breakfast ideas will be highly appreciated since that is the one meal I am clueless when it  comes to experimenting.

P.S I have tried Soy milk with the Atkins cereal and all I can say is Ew! Ew! Ew!!!!!!

Thanks for your time,
Nicky

Hi Nicky,

Have you seen the Hood products called "Carb Countdown"?  They get a big thumbs-up from all the low-carbers I know.  To me, it tastes a little sweeter than regular milk, but it's quite good and very low carb.  I've seen it all over the place, in regular grocery stores and convenience stores, too.  You might check Hood's website to see if it is available in your area.

Other options include unsweetened almond milk, which is available at health food stores and Trader Joe's, if you're lucky enough to live near one, and rice milk, although I'm not sure of the carb count there.  I've heard good things about a soy milk called Soy Slender, but I am sensitive to soy so I have no personal experience with it.   I hope this helps -- good luck!

Regards,
Joan
